Evaluation: Question 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

The main objective of my Media Product was to attract an audience. Without an audience my Media Product wouldn't had been developed in the way it was. This is because my inspiration, props, ideas and locations were all formulated from my target audience's expectations.
Therefore, to attract my target audience, I followed the codes and conventions they expected from my product such as, the 'chav' stereotype that my audience can associate with there own lives. Moreover, the isolated location is an iconic location that my audience would like to see but would never see for themselves in real life. Therefore, they are attracted to my product because they wanted to see what that location is like and portrayed. Furthermore, the victim in my Media Product depicts the social group 'Trendie' which is one of the most popular social group to date. So when my actor portrays them, they feel my product relates to them directly.

General Questions Asked:

  1. What draws your attention first?
  2. What genre is it? How do you know it is that genre?
  3. What do you consider the strengths of the products?
  4. What social groups does it represent and how does it represent them?
  5. Would you purchase my product and why?
  6. How would you improve my product?

  • Beginning of the film draws my attention because it cuts and and out whilst it is dark.
  • Obviously a Horror Film opening.
  • The main strength is the quiet sound that draws your attention and makes you want to see more.
  • There is nothing to improve, it's really good.

  • The eeriness of it grabs my attention.
  • Clearly represents a horror and the characters look really good.
  • The music reinforces the horror genre.
  • The main strength is that it flows together and all fits together.
  • Represents a 'trendie' social class with disobedient individuals.
  • I would buy it because it fits with the horror genre and is professional.
  • The lighting needs improvement in some areas.

  • Music is interesting and attracts my attention.
  • It is a horror genre which is obviously signified by the red writing.
  • The acting and editing is a good strength because it is well put together.
  • I wouldn't purchase this because I don't like horror films.
  • No improvements because it is good and professional.

  • The need to see more grabs my attention first.
  • The genre is definitely horror.
  • The camera shots, music and locations work well because they reinforce the genre.
  • Represents a trendie social group of the ages 18 to 25.
  • I would purchase this product and go see it in a cinema because it is good.
  • Can't see any reason to improve it.

  • Easily tell the genre is horror because the credits are red and black to indicate death.
  • I like the credits because they are quite unusual.
  • It seems to appeal to 18-25 year olds, mainly men.
  • I wouldn't improve anything.

After multiple interviews with my target audience, I have recieved postive feedback and learned many different ways in which my product shows strong strengths. For instnace, many people were easily aware of my product's genre becasue of the intimidating colours such as red and black. Moreover, the dark lighting and discordant music was a common feature that reinforced the genre too. Although my audience said it was a strong product becasue it created an enigma, used good effects and music, my audience feedback still had some negatives. Common cons of my product was the dark lighting being too dark and the music being too loud. However, the majority of my audience didn't suggest any other improvments and said they would buy my product in a shop or go see it at the cinema.

Therefore, I feel my audience feedback has been successful, but if I was to re-make my product again, I would make sure I use better lighting equipment in order to improve the quality of film. I woudl also use a greater pace of editing and sound when the antagonist eppears. This would hen make the action have a greater impact on the audience. Furthermore, I would use a camera of greater quality becasue target audience's like to watch films in great quality these days. However, everything seems to be ideal for my target audience so overall I am pleased with my product.

Final Production: Editing Intertitles & Creating a Logo

After pitching my rough-cut, I was given some suggestions that will help improve my product in it's final state. The first suggestion was to add a 'blinkering' effect on the final intertitle 'UNWANTED' to add greater effect. After that the other suggestions were shortening some down and adding a logo at the start of my film opening to match better codes and conventions of a horror film opening. The following screenshots of me doing this can be viewed below.

ADDING THE 'BLINK' EFFECT

In this screenshot, I have added a 'Blink' effect to the intertitle 'UNWANTED' because it was to vague before. However, this effect has made it more effective because it brings it alive. To do this, I clicked on 'Video' in the 'Effects' tab and added the filter 'Blink' to my intertitles. After that, I had to double clip on the intertitle and press 'Filter'. This then allowed me to use the 'Pen-Tool' on the mini-timeline to edit the duration and tempo of the 'Blink'. I varied the tempo and duration to create the effect of a flickering light that are usually associated with horror films mise-en-scene.

CREATING A LOGO

In this screenshot I have opened up a new canvas in 'Photoshop' and changed it's properties. For instance, I changed the width to 720pixels, the height to 540pixels, the resolution to 72pixels/cm and the colour mode to RGB Colour. This way, my logo will import into 'Final Cut Express' at the right size.

In this screenshot, I have turned coloured the canvas black with the 'Paint Bucket Tool' and then used the 'Line-Tool' to draw a cross through the middle as a guide for the diagonal lines that form the roof.

I then expanded my logo by adding a chimney and then smoke with the 'Pen-Tool' to signify it is the roof of a house in a very simplistic way.

I then deleted the layers that formed the crosses and added text in white to emphasise it on a black background. Although the logo remains very simplistic, it suggests creativity because the text that says "Under the Roof Productions" is actually 'under' the roof of a house. Therefore, it demonstrates the use of thought to create an effective logo.

ADDING THE LOGO AS AN INTERTITLE TO MY PROJECT

Within this screenshot I have went to 'File' and found 'Import'. This then allowed me to press 'Files' and find my logo saved in it's folder to open on 'Final Cut Express'. So I dragged it onto the timeline and used it as an intertitle.

FINAL LOGO DESIGN

This is the final design for my logo that I created in 'Photoshop'. It was fairly easy to make and I also developed minor skills in 'Photoshop' too. However, I have learned how tro integrate my skills in 'Final Cut Express' and 'Photoshop' together, so that I can improve my final product overall.

Rough-Cut Pitch Reflection

I have now pitched the rough-cut of my production to a small proportion of my target audience and my teacher. Here is some of the feedback I received:

In retrospect, I have received some very positive feedback from both my target audience and my teacher. Some of the positives were, good use of music, hard work has paid off and a really good story line that works effectively. My Teacher agreed with these comments but has give me the following corrections that could improve my product. She stated that the music was good but had too much bass. Moreover, she suggested shortening some shots to keep the audience more orientated. She also said that including a logo and animating my final title "UNWANTED" could be animated for greater effect. Some of my target audience agreed with these improvements. However, overall I have received positive feedback that will help improve my product, and they are fairly easy to do.

Moving Image Production (Rough-Cut)

This is the Rough-Cut of my Moving Image Production.

Rough-Cut: Editing Sound & Lighting

Whilst editing the rough-cut of my product on 'Final Cut Express', I have developed my editing skills by capturing footage and cutting clips up into the timeline. However, the lighting and sound needed a lot more work. Therefore, I have developed my skills in both of these sections. The following screenshots are examples of how I did this.

EDITING LIGHTING

In this screenshot I intended to lighten the following shot with Jake. So I went to 'effects' and pressed on 'Video Filters' to see the different filter options. I pressed on 'Colour Corrector' and dragged onto the clip within my timeline. This then allowed me to open up the filter and move the; whites, mids, blacks and sutures left to right to ensure the shot with Jake could be seen. I moved the whites to the right to shot lighter, but then toned down the mids to stop the shot looking grainy. Finally, I moved the 'blacks' to the right to match the whites again so the shot looked brighter and didn't look grainy. I didn't change the 'stature' because it wasn't necessary and I feel the shot still has that 'horror' element to it.

EDITING SOUND

In this screenshot I was editing my sound because at parts it seemed unrealistic and slightly to high or low in some places. For this specific example, I was using the 'Pen - Tool' in order to break up the volume line. THerefore, I pressed on the volume line and dragged on half of the volume down because I wanted it to be suddenly quiet for specific part of my project. I did this for my other sounds too.

Shooting Schedule

Whilst filming my product, I had to fill in a Shooting Schedule every time I recorded footage from the camera. I have re-typed therm on the computer so that they are easy to see. They can all be seen below here:
